Formation pathways of Precambrian sedimentary pyrite: Insights from in situ Fe isotopes

چکیده
Iron isotope compositions (expressed as δ56Fe) in sedimentary pyrite have been widely used tracers of redox and chemical evolution the ocean through geological time. Previous studies mostly built on mechanical extraction sulfides from bulk rock samples, focused visible macroscopic pyrites, which may introduce a sampling bias. In situ analyses micropyrite grains can provide new insights into processes formation their time evolution. Here, we compile ca. 2000 iron Archean to Paleoproterozoic pyrite, previous literature well data. Contrasting with analyses, displays large constant range δ56Fe values, -4 +4‰, Micropyrite values are not significantly influenced by metamorphic grade. A bimodal distribution positive versus negative be attributed two different formation, Fe (oxyhydr)oxide sulfidation, kinetic possibly microbially mediated precipitation. These tightly related lithology thus conditions, existed since 3.8 Ga.

Pathways for Neoarchean pyrite formation constrained by mass-independent sulfur isotopes.
It is generally thought that the sulfate reduction metabolism is ancient and would have been established well before the Neoarchean. It is puzzling, therefore, that the sulfur isotope record of the Neoarchean is characterized by a signal of atmospheric mass-independent chemistry rather than a strong overprint by sulfate reducers. Here, we present a study of the four sulfur isotopes obtained usi...
متن کاملAbiotic pyrite formation produces a large Fe isotope fractionation.
The iron isotope composition of sedimentary pyrite has been proposed as a potential proxy to trace microbial metabolism and the redox evolution of the oceans. We demonstrate that Fe isotope fractionation accompanies abiotic pyrite formation in the absence of Fe(II) redox change. Combined fractionation factors between Fe(II)(aq), mackinawite, and pyrite permit the generation of pyrite with Fe is...
متن کاملAmbient pyrite in precambrian chert: new evidence and a theory.
Ambient pyrites of two distinct types were described from middle Precambrian rocks of the Lake Superior area. A new class of this phenomenon is here described from middle Precambrian chert from western Australia. The newly found ambient pyrites are quite minute and characteristically occur in groups forming a "starburst" pattern. All three types of ambient pyrite may be explained in terms of pr...
متن کاملSedimentary sulfur isotopes and Neoarchean ocean oxygenation
Abrupt disappearance of mass-independent fractionation of sulfur isotopes (MIF-S) from the geologic record and an apparent ingrowth in seawater sulfate around 2.45 billion years ago (Ga) signal the first large-scale oxygenation of the atmosphere [the Great Oxygenation Event (GOE)]. Pre-GOE O2 production is evident from multiple other terrestrial and marine proxies, but oceanic O2 concentrations...
متن کاملSulfur biogeochemistry and isotopic fractionation in shallow groundwater and sediments of Owens Dry Lake, California
Groundwater and sediment samples (~1 m depth) at sites representative of different groundwater pathways were collected to determine the aqueous speciation of sulfur and the fractionation of sulfur isotopes in aqueous and solid phases. In addition, selected sediment samples at 5 depths (from oxic to anoxic layers) were collected to investigate the processes controlling sulfur biogeochemistry in ...
